Explore a world long-forgotten.  This stunning print portrays the historical "Government House," the first attempt (in New York City) at what would ultimately become the White House in D.C.  Built in 1790, it was intended to be the executive home of then-President, George Washington, but the Federal government was moved to Philadelphia and finally to Washington, before the mansion's completion.  George Washington never lived there.

Instead, the Government House went through a series of other uses, becoming first the governor's mansion, later an upscale boarding house, a customs house, a leased home, and ultimately an art school, before finally being demolished in 1815.

Though the house only stood for twenty-five years, it housed a bevy of creative and entrepreneurial people, all the while standing as a monument to a future that never was.  Let this lovely symbol of what could be brighten your walls.
