There's something irresistible about the physical act of writing, of putting pen to paper.  In that moment, one becomes a soul, a thought, a word -- a purer being, not distracted by the little nothings of our day, but truly and deeply connected to world around us in an intimate form of expression.  Today, tools allowed such self-expression become harder and harder to find, but this is one that has stood the test of time.

Handcrafted in Italy by Italian artisans who trace their craft back and back through the centuries, this breathtaking piece is born from an age-old tradition and handcrafted, uniting body and spirit, place and history, practice and art all once more.  Each journal is as unique as the person who wields it, created by the work of human hands, helping you step into a world of timeless serenity.

Please note, due to the handmade nature, each one is completely unique.

  • Handcrafted in small batches by Italian artisans in Chianciano Terme and Montepulciano, Siena, Italy as well as in Orvieto, Terni, Italy

A WORD FROM THE ARTISANS:

Please note that the following has been translated from Italian into English.

"It's a unique piece, hand crafted with love by expert artisans, for people who can appreciate the beautiful things," write the owners.  "The article...is the fruit of patient craftwork.  It will come alive while you use it to communicate your thoughts, with elegance and personality.

"As far as we know, the first forms of writing date back about to 5,000 years ago.  The people of Syria, Babylon, Egypt, and China already used the most varied material, such as clay and wax tablets and long rolls of the papyrus up to 40 meters.  They used simple tools to write, such as animal bones, bamboo, and so on, while inks were made from soot and colours obtained from plants and other organic substances.

"The goose quill will be introduced later in the fifth or sixth century by Christian monks who wanted to hand down Christian doctrines and left the first manuscripts of western civilization.  Thanks to the goose quill, writing became fluid and easily adapatable to various personal styles, giving rise to calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing.

"The evolution of mankind is due to writing and possibility of recording human knowledge and transmitting feelings, emotions, and images."

According to the Siena-based team, "[Our bookbindery] was born in 1985 in Chianciano Terme (Siena - Italy) from the passion for books of the brothers Francesco and Cosimo Riccio. Ours is a typical Italian artisan shop, exciting and a bit out of time, pervaded by the typical sweet-sour smell of leather. The processing is done exclusively by hand, with top quality materials and leathers of Italian origin vegetable-tanned...

"We are very proud of our product, which we define as 'sentimental' for the strong attraction it exerts on the most diverse people. The opportunities to give or treat yourself to a writing set or a photo album are countless throughout your life, regardless of latitude and culture, even in an era of strong computerization. We have a portfolio of...customers [looking for] stationery, gift, and tourism in Italy, Europe, and overseas. We work every day to build a solid and trusting relationship with our customers, wherever they are."

Fine collections of leather bound journals and photo albums, handmade papers, and writing accessories, directly from the shop in Montepulciano (Siena) Italy and Orvieto, Terni.
