A recreation of an actual Ancient Egyptian artifact, this stunning oil lamp depicts the great goddess Hathor, one of the most beloved, and one of the most powerful gods of the entire Egyptian pantheon. Goddess of the sky, goddess of women (though men also worshipped her), goddess of fertility, goddess of love, and goddess of beauty, music, dancing, and pleasure. Along with Bastet and Sekhmet, Hathor was one of the three goddesses granted the title, "Eye of Ra," as a defender of the sun. As the wife of Horus, she was considered -- along with the mortal mother -- the divine mother of the pharaoh and Queen of Egypt, and her worship dates back to early dynastic Egypt, or further, making her one of the earliest gods of Egypt.
"In her role as goddess of beauty," states the Rosicrucian Museum of Egypt's website. "[Hathor] was the patron of cosmetics. Wearing cosmetics was seen as a form of worship to Hathor, and offerings of mirrors or cosmetic palettes to her were common." This striking oil lamp served as one such domestic tribute, allowing its users to see by her divine light.
