In 1880, the Historical & Antiquarian Club met in Hartford, Connecticut and, as a result a man named Samuel Clemes took up his pen. Celebrating the arrival of the club, Mr. Clemens -- known to history as Mark Twain -- wrote On the Decay of the Art of Lying. His iconic satirical wit in full flower, Twain discusses the universal pastime of lying, and argues that judicious lying should be not only encouraged but cultivated, as long as one strives "to lie with a good object, and not an evil one; to lie for others' advantage, and not our own; to lie healingly, charitably, humanely, not cruelly, hurtfully, maliciously..."
